Cohen loves the rides at the fair. We were surprised the first year when he went on rides and kept wanting to go on more! He's always been a sensory input kinda guy (spinning, swinging) so this is perfect. He's also lucky enough to have cousins, auntie, and daddy who will take him on rides. Cohen tried to talk is into the Gravitron 3000 (the one where you go in and get plastered against the wall while it just spins in circles) but he had no willing supervision to go with him. Ezra did well on the rides this year too! And of course loved the animals and the tractors.
Shade for me, sand and rocks and water for the boys. And the weird thing is, no one is ever there! It's finally heating up around here and this pregnant lady doesn't tolerate it very well (a true pacific northwesterner here).

These boys are growing up so fast, I can't believe it! Both will start preschool in a couple weeks.
Today, Cohen came up from the basement with this little smile on his face. He told me he needed to tell me something and whispered in my ear "Today is Stinky's birthday!!" Stinky is Cohen's lovey that he has had since a few months old. He hasn't been as attached to Stinky lately but apparently he deserved a party today! After that he decided that Stinky needed to have a cake with frosting and that it needed to be a surprise. I'm not sure how we came to the conclusion that it was Stinky's second birthday, but that's what he decided.

We had to take a trip out, so we decided to go with it and swing by the store and get Stinky a cake. We let Cohen take the lead and pick out what he thought Stinky wanted. We were going to make a cake but it was getting close to bedtime and we decided it would be faster to buy something. Cohen picked out a german chocolate cake and some ice cream. When we got home, the boys put extra sprinkles and candles on the cake.

We also invited Gramma and Grampa over for Stinky's party and then brought him a blanket and hat for his birthday. We lit the candles and sang "Happy Birthday". The whole thing was pretty darn cute and Cohen was thrilled and had a big smile on his face. I'd say it was worth it to throw Stinky a party, they've been through a lot together!

He has always loved to walk and walk (and walk and walk and walk). Maybe it has to do with the fact that we have gone on walks since pretty much the day we brought him home from the NICU because we needed out. Or maybe it's that he likes to walk and look at everything around him and check it alllll out. Either way, I think it's calming and a good outlet for him.

His Gramma signed them up to do a local fun run/walk. Every day he would ask if Gramma was coming to get him for his "big walk". We fed him an extra big breakfast and sent him on his way with Gramma, his auntie and cousin Jordan. He made it the whole way with only one short piggyback from Gramma and even did some running at the beginning! Pretty proud of all that this guy has been up to this month!!

Baby Kimmel #4 is coming in October! I am currently 14 weeks along. I had my first ultrasound around 10 weeks and all looked good and I get to be a normal person! My pregnancy with Ezra was treated as high risk and I had an ultrasound every 2 weeks. This time I'm on a regular schedule with regular appointments! I had to ask my OB what they actually do at a "normal" appointment and she laughed, but I really have no idea!

The first trimester went fairly smoothly, I did have some morning sickness and only wanted to eat bread type foods. I couldn't stand any kind of brown meat. It has since gotten a little better but I'm still mostly only wanting bland foods. I couldn't believe how tired I have been. Apparently I'm not 25 anymore.

We are considering not finding out the gender of baby until it's born! We thought it might be a fun surprise for our last baby. The chances of it being a boy are good. The boys are excited and love to hear the baby's heartbeat. Cohen keeps telling me that the baby has to stay in for 9 months, let's hope, kid! We will have our next ultrasound around 18 weeks to do the anatomy ultrasound. Praying for boring and normal! The Kimmelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02822076540485203983noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2837703357651074624.post-65826650906270103992016-04-15T10:50:00.003-07:002016-04-15T10:50:38.767-07:00Movin' On Up! Around 3 weeks ago, we decided it would be a good time to sell our house. Que whirlwind of activity. In this same 3 weeks, we rehomed our dog, painted the inside of our house, said goodbye to our kitty after he broke his leg badly, got 3 new goldfish, accepted an offer on our house and put an offer on another house!

Crazy. And slightly stressful. I am, however, so thankful that we got an offer the day we listed our house. And I only had to keep it super showing ready for 2 days. I don't know if you know my boys, but its basically impossible.
We are super excited for this new chapter in our lives. And...if you can't read the boys' shirts, they are getting a new baby brother or sister! The Kimmelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02822076540485203983noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2837703357651074624.post-23572981361310858922016-03-27T21:06:00.001-07:002016-03-27T21:06:20.174-07:00Easter 2016Things have been a little bit crazy around here and I haven't had time to keep up with the blog like I always hope I can. It has been so nice to be able to look up posts over the last few years to remember things. We have had lots of winter sicknesses through the house, a trip to the allergist for Ezra for ongoing, unexplained hives, getting a dog and sadly having to find a new home for him, a job change for Danny, and now we are getting our house ready to sell! Cra.zy.

We attempted church this morning, ended up sitting in the back and leaving early. Since we've been sick and haven't been able to go to church in awhile, Cohen was a little out of the routine plus no children's church and the Easter excitement and it just wasn't going to happen. So we ended up sitting through the singing and then making our way up for Easter breakfast being served through the rest of the service. We tried. I'm thankful it's about Jesus and all HE has done and not about us.

I didn't even get a good picture of the boys before church and since we've been so crazy I didn't even get to get them any cute matching outfits or anything. Oh well, maybe next year.

After the church fiasco, we gave the boys their little Easter baskets (bubble guns! Giant chalk!) and then headed over to my parents house for lunch. My sister plans an awesome egg hunt every year and the boys were super excited about it.

Ezra was all in and ran around the yard collecting eggs like a champ. Cohen was a little more selective, choosing only the blue, pink and purple eggs and returning the rest to the yard for someone else.

After lunch and egg hunting, the boys were ready for a sugar crash so we left to take Carter some flowers and then home. Ezra fell asleep on the five minute drive home after no nap. We saw some sun this afternoon which was SO nice and much needed.

Happy Easter! He is risen!
And then there's this guy. In the full swing of being 2. He has recently decided that he is potty trained (what!? I didn't even have to do anything!) He loves to assert his independence and loudly declare "I do it!" about everything. He's also practicing his negotiation skills to try and get more jelly beans for going potty. I know you wouldn't guess it by this face, but also a little bit of a troublemaker and instigator of all things naughty.
We hopped on a plane and headed to Utah to meet THE ladies behind Teeny Tears, the diaper organization who has played such an important role in my life over the last 4 years. Originally, my mom made plans to go, asked me if I wanted to go, I didn't think there was any way I would be able to get away. BUT, thanks to my wonderful family and friends, we were able to work it out. But we kept it a surprise for Megan, who had NO idea I was coming. Her reaction was so worth it, she was definitely surprised. One of the best surprises ever.

We got to spend a few days with Megan and Vanessa, the ringleaders of Teeny Tears seeing all the "behind the scenes" stuff and helping them out with a few things. While we were there, they held a diaper party and there were several people that we "knew" online that we got to meet in person. It was such a special, encouraging day. I also got to meet another fellow TTTS mom that I knew but had never met. We processed 1000 diapers and made 2500+ tiny hats!

I also got to meet THIS amazing little fellow. Megan's son, a fellow TTTS surviving twin, just like Cohen. This kid is a fighter, through and through. I love him to pieces and may have shed a few tears when he popped through the door after school.

I give these ladies and tiny diapers a lot of credit for helping me keep my sanity over the 4 years. At a time when I could have fallen into a dark hole that I would have struggled to get out of, I threw myself into late night emails to Megan dreaming about how we could diaper the whole world. I sewed many tiny diapers to mail out. I found something productive and positive to do with my grief and love for Carter. I also found hope and friends who had walked similar paths.
It's about healing and hope and community. In a world that can seem so dark these days, it's so great to know this group of amazing people exists that want to help make things just a little better for families in an incredibly difficult time. Many of the volunteers making diapers (and hats and blankets) are baby loss parents, grandparents, aunties etc. Some of them found the project after they themselves received a diaper and came to the group to start making them themselves. It's amazing what Teeny Tears has grown into.

It was so, so great to get to meet these ladies in person. It sounded a little crazy to jump on a plane and go meet our "internet friends", but I'm so, so glad that I was able to go. One of the best trips of my life. It feels a little bit like leaving summer camp and hoping and praying you get a chance to see your friends again someday.
One day, he could put on his own shoes! And with a little work, his socks too! He can write his name and recognizes all the letters of the alphabet and numbers 1-20. He hasn't been much of a drawer up until recently. He drew this today and I couldn't help but be so proud! Cohen is getting to be so grown up!
I promised him NO drops because of our last experience and when he was doing so well, we decided to do the drops. He handled it like a champ! AND he has perfect vision and no scarring or damage from his ROP as a baby (common preemie eye problem). Such a better experience than last time!!
Cohen's preschool is talking about families. He got a note with a little bag of small rocks with instructions to send back a stone for each family member and a family photo. It seems simple enough, right?

But then I feel it. The heaviness in my heart that we don't have that extra stone. That the pictures won't include our Carter, the other member of our family. Someday when Cohen understands more I will let him decide what and who he wants to tell about his brother. We counted out the four stones to send back to school, feeling the ache in my heart. This may be our first encounter with this, but I know it won't be our last. I don't know how we will handle it in the future, probably however Cohen feels he wants to handle it.

It took me a while to get over the guilt of answering "how many kids do you have?" with the number of my living children. But I reached a point where I didn't need to tell every single person about Carter. I know he is my child and in some ways, I feel like I'm protecting us both by not always delving into his story. There have been times where I have mentioned him and have been so, so blessed by the reaction, stories, or hugs I have received. But not everyone understands child loss (thankfully) and the reactions can be awkward and uncomfortable and hurtful. So I've learned to go with what feels right in the situation. I have a feeling this may become similar in the future for Cohen. But right now, the first time makes me feel that deep longing for my child and how much I wish he could be here counting out family stones with his brother. The Kimmelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02822076540485203983noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2837703357651074624.post-24701704516397067682015-10-21T22:31:00.002-07:002015-10-21T22:31:33.862-07:00Sharing Our StoryWhew! We're still here...just busy and tired!

Over the last couple months we've had a couple more cool opportunities to share our story. It's always emotional and tiring, but we feel it's important to share and we are so thankful for the people out there who are trying to make the difficult path of the NICU and child loss a little bit better.

Last month, we did a video interview with UW, where the boys were born. The video will be used to train healthcare workers in the NICU experience and also what it's like to lose a child. Today we had the opportunity to be a part of a parent panel for a NICU conference.

Reliving all of the hard moments, the difficult moments in our experience that we wish we could forget, and the experiences we will always cherish is very emotionally draining but it's also so rewarding. To know that people are willing to hear our stories and to learn from our experiences gives me a lot of hope for future families that will walk a similar path. Of course nothing is going to fix the situation or make it pain free, but there are definitely things that can be done to improve how a family and their child is treated during such an impossibly difficult time. It's also so interesting to hear the other parents stories and even though we've never met before, we just all connect. And I'm always so honored to hear the stories of their little ones.

Even though it's hard, we always find it so rewarding to share our story and that people are so receptive. We are humbled and thankful that people want to listen. The Kimmelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02822076540485203983noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2837703357651074624.post-28059805052512237952015-09-26T20:54:00.001-07:002015-09-26T20:54:46.889-07:00Apple Picking 2015Today we went for our annual apple picking trip to a local spot nearby (last year's trip is here). We've all been fighting colds, thanks first week of school, and the weather wasn't great but we decided to go for it anyway.
After having the summer off, it was a pretty big adjustment for him. He was not excited about it, but he was brave and has been doing well so far. He goes 4 days a week now and gets multiple services while at school. He also gets to ride the bus which he thinks is pretty great.

Ezra is a little bit jealous of big brother. He tries to get on the bus every day and the few times we've visited Cohen's preschool he has made himself right at home and not wanted to leave! Cohen's class is half kids who need services and "peers", kids who are developing "normally". I think I need to sign Ezra up to be a peer next year, I know he would love it!
Cohen starts preschool again this week so we decided to embrace our last day off. Cohen loves adventuring and hiking. Ezra has always been little enough to carry in the hiking backpack but we decided to let him tromp around on his own today. Obviously, it wasn't a difficult hike but the boys loved it and it was so great to get up to the mountains!

Ezra is big into the 2 year old "me do it" phase. He loved climbing all the big rocks by himself and then jumping off just as many other ones.

Oddly enough, for someone who has long struggled with balance and physical motor skills, Cohen is in his element when he's hiking and exploring. For some reason, he seems to be so much more coordinated and climbs rocks and goes over uneven ground without much trouble. It's so great to see. We joked today how awesome it would be if our "wimpy white boy" who spent two months on a ventilator, spent 8 months of his life on oxygen, and was supposed to have "crappy lungs" became a mountain climber! (Well, we know he has already climbed so.many.mountains. but you know, actual physical mountains someday)
We came home, did six loads of laundry, threw the camping stuff in a pile and then packed it all up again a few days later.
The boys did good, they liked running back and forth between campsites and playing in the dirt. We did get rained on the second night, but you aren't a true pacific northwesterner if you aren't blue tarp camping. When we first got there I knew there was rain in the forecast and I asked Danny to see about getting a tarp over the tent. I came back and he had draped the tarp directly over the tent (instead of tying it to trees above) it was pretty classy and we looked a bit like redneck campers. They did fix it up properly on Saturday which is good since it rained Saturday night.
Cohen was fascinated by the fish the big boys caught. After Danny cleaned and gutted them he had them in a bucket and Cohen just stared and stared at them. "Why aren't they swimming? Hey! What happened to their heads!?"

We haven't been to one before but went this year and had so much fun! The boys had a blast and it was nice to let them roam knowing we knew everyone around us. We weren't entirely sure if any of us would get any sleep based on the boys' recent poor sleeping habits. The first night was rough but they were exhausted by the second night and slept great! We got home and I immediately put them in the tub to get off 3 days worth of dirt and then started in on 3 loads of laundry. We are only partly unpacking, because we are doing it all again next weekend, this time a family camping trip!
We've been busy! Cohen has conquered his fear of water and now loves to "swim" in Gramma's pool. He wears a life jacket, clings to the side, and works his way around the pool. Sometimes he gets in a floatie and lets us push him around the pool. Ezra got in once, loved it, and won't get in again.
These boys are starting to notice each other a little more, which is so great, and so...them being brothers. They fight like crazy and then every once in awhile, just when you think they can't fight any more, they play...together! They love to play "construction site" which is generally them digging large holes in my garden and run and chase. Cohen yells "Ezra, tackle me!" and then they run around like crazy.

One of the things that I grieved a lot, was Cohen not getting to do life with his brother. Then this sweet little rainbow baby punk came along. It is so good for my heart to get to see them developing a deeper relationship and I'm so thankful they get to experience life together.

The Kimmelshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02822076540485203983noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2837703357651074624.post-44343414100303956822015-07-01T21:52:00.000-07:002015-07-01T21:52:48.151-07:00The Child Who Won't SleepThe newborn stage is supposed to be the hardest, right? And once you get them to learn how to sleep through the night, it's all downhill until they are teenagers and you can't get the to wake up right? Not around here! The boys have been good sleepers and we have been spoiled. We have reached a time where it feels like we are back in the newborn stage, and worse because they can walk and talk.

Maybe it's the weather, the temperament of a certain 4 year old, sensory overload, too dark, too light, you get the picture.

If you are in the same boat, I'm going to save you some time and give you a list of things that we've tried and that have worked to get our child to sleep.

1. Everything and nothing.

And there you have it! We've tried everything and nothing ever works consistently. We've tried lighter, darker, room darkening shades, curtain open for a little light. Top bunk, lower bunk. Sippy cup, no sippy cup. Essential oils, melatonin, talking, not talking, snuggling, not snuggling. Rewards, losing toys. Timers. Clocks. Daddy, mommy, Ezra, no Ezra. Blankets, no blankets, special blanket. Tranquilizers and mixed drinks (just kidding, those are just for mom and dad!)

This guy is a hard nut to crack. Some nights something will work, the next night, not a chance. We've been struggling with winding down to go to sleep, staying asleep, and waking up with the sun (which is early these days).

If you have a child in the throes of sleeplessness, I feel your pain and your exhaustion. Hang on to your sanity and keep telling yourself it's only a phase (it's only a phase, right!?)

So much joy and healing he has brought to our hearts. And gray hairs.

He wears size 24 month/2T clothes, size 6 shoes and size 5 diapers.

He is starting to say more words, his favorites are bonk, hurt, bee, no, mine, water, poop, and peese (please). He also says a few two word sentences like "Mama, hurt" and "Mama, peese"

Ezra is all boy. He loves dirt, tractors, throwing things, trains, cars, the swimming pool and kitties. But he also likes his snuggles, gives good hugs, and always comes for a kiss when he gets "hurt". And he is totally a mama's boy.
